Janet Jackson has paid tribute to her late brother Michael Jackson with an electrifying performance at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards.PERMALINK
After the lights dimmed to conclude Madonna’s emotional MJ tribute, Janet continued the Michael Jackson-themed VMAs opener with the first performance of the night.
Michael’s Thriller video played on a giant screen before a group of dancers (comprised of the world’s most famous choreographers) in a variety of MJ trademark outfits took to the stage to deliver a perfectly choreographed zombie dance along with the footage from the clip, followed by Bad and Smooth Criminal.
Then Scream (Michael’s duet with Janet) hit the big screen, and with a cloud of white fog sprouting up out of space-age honeycombs, Janet kicked through a mirror and emerged to huge roars of excitement from the likes of Alicia Keys, Beyoncé and Pink.
Wearing a black-and-white, skintight leather dress with matching pants, Janet danced her way through a routine of her and Michael's signature moves, flawlessly re-creating her late brother's steps as they were projected on the screen behind her.
Great performance; great tribute; no wardrobe malfunction. Job done!
The dancers that took the stage for "Thriller" and "Bad" were good but it was obviously Janet Jackson's performance of "Scream," her duet with Michael, that pushed the opening performance to an emotional and creative climax. Janet dancing alongside with the music video moves of her late brother proved to be one of her most memorable performances in years and one of the best tribute to Michael all summer.PERMALINK

Best Homage: After a tribute from Madonna the show rolls tape of Mark Goodman, one of the originals MTV VJs, introducing the world premiere of Michael Jackson's "Thriller" some 25 years ago. This leads to a moving dance tribute to Jackson that crescendos with his sister, Janet, dancing in syncopation with MJ against the backdrop of their duet, "Scream." She looks great, and it's hard not to be moved by the tribute.
